
Zohair Youssif Akache (1954-18 October 1977), also called Captain Martyr Mahmud, was a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) member who was one of the hijackers of Lufthansa Flight 181.
Biography[]
Zohair Youssif Akache was born in 1954 in Palestine, and he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Marxist-Leninist terrorist group. On 13 October 1977, Akache, Suhaila Sayeh, Wabil Harb, and Hind Alameh hijacked Lufthansa Flight 181 on its Rome-Athens flight, and it made several stopovers before landing in Mogadishu, Somalia. West Germany's GSG-9 special forces launched an assault on the hijacked plane, and he was mortally wounded during the firefight with the counter-terrorists. He died of his injuries hours later, and Sayeh would be the only survivor in the group.
