The Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) was a democratic socialist militant organization that fought against the white government of Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Bush War in the 1970s. Formed on 8 August 1963 by Enos Nkala, Ndabaningi Sithole, Edgar Tekere, Herbert Chitepo, and Leopold Takawira. The ZANU was supplied by China and other left-wing countries, and the group fought against the government from within Zimbabwe and Mozambique from 1964 to 1979. Its most prominent leader, Robert Mugabe, was elected Prime Minister of an independent Zimbabwe in 1980, and the ZANU transformed into the ZANU-PF party.
