
Zakharias I of Makuria (630-696) was the first of Makuria of the House of Azim, reigning until his death in 696, when his son Merkourios of Makuria succeeded him.
Biography[]
Zakharias was born in 630 to the Miaphysite Christian Nubian House of Azim, and he was the first king of Makuria of the Azim dynasty. He reigned over the southernmost Christian kingdom of Nubia, and he rubbed elbows with the kings of Axum and Abyssinia. Upon his death in 696, his son Merkourios of Makuria succeeded him.
