Zakariyah the Mamluk (2 November 1225-) was the captain of the Mamluks, the slave soldiers in the service of the Bahri Sultanate.
Biography[]
Zakariyah was born on 2 November 1225 to an enslaved family of Shia Muslim Egyptians, and he became a slave soldier with the Bahri Mamluks. By 1250, he was the captain of the Mamluk mercenaries, a sizeable army of around 14,000 warriors. His company of mamluks fought in the various wars of Sultan Aybak and his successors, and it was hired only by the Bahri Sultanate, never betraying Egypt.
