Zagwe

The Zagwe dynasty was a medieval Ethiopian kingdom which existed from 900 to 1270, with Lalibela serving as its capital. The kings of Zagwe claimed descent from King Solomon of the Bible, and they replaced the kingdom of Axum after the Jewish queen Gudit conquered it in 960. Zagwe existed until 1270, when the Abyssinian king Yekuno Amlak slew the last Zagwe ruler, Za-Ilmaknun, and established the Ethiopian Empire.
