The Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) is a socialist political party in Zimbabwe, founded on 22 December 1987 by former ZANU guerrilla leader Robert Mugabe. The party was founded as a merger of ZANU with the socialist ZAPU party, and the party's charter stated that it sought to create a single-party state guided by Marxism-Leninism, while also ending the violence in Matabeleland and restoring order to the country. Robert Mugabe, the ZANU-PF leader, was corrupted by his power, leading to ZAPU splitting from the party to become an opposition faction.
