Yukhym Zvyahilsky

Yukhym Leonidovych Zvyahilsky (20 February 1933-6 November 2021) was acting Prime Minister of Ukraine from 22 September 1993 to 16 June 1994, succeeding Leonid Kuchma and preceding Vitaliy Masol.

Biography[]

Yukhym Leonidovych Zvyahilsky was born in Stalino, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union on 20 February 1933, and he worked as a miner and engineer before becoming director of a coal mine from 1979 to 1992. In March 1990, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada as a Communist Party of the Soviet Union member. In 1993, he became First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine under Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma, and he served as acting Prime Minister from 1993 to 1994 after Kuchma became President of Ukraine. In 1994, Kuchma accused Zvyahilsky of having stolen $20 million from the government, forcing Zvyahilsky to flee to Israel, while still serving as an MP. Zvyahilsky returned in March 1997, and, in 2002, he joined the pro-Russian Party of Regions. In 2014, he joined the Opposition Bloc, and he did not participate in the 2019 parliamentary elections. He died of COVID-19 in 2021 at the age of 88.
