The Youth International Party, better known as the Yippies, was an American anarchist and communist political party that was founded in 1967 at the height of the counterculture movement. The Yippies were anti-Vietnam War and promoted free speech, and their members were predominantly college-age anarchist youths and hippies who were known for their love for marijuana, their pranks, and their humor. In 1968, the party ran a pig, "Pigasus the Immortal", as its presidential candidate to mock the government, and the party organized "smoke-ins" during the 1970s and 1980s. However, its strength declined after the Vietnam War ended and the counterculture movement faded away, and it would never hold an elected office.
