The Young Guard was the junior section of Napoleon I's Garde Imperiale, existing from 1809 to 1814. The Young Guard consisted of the best young recruits of the Grande Armee, and Marshal Edouard Mortier commanded the guard under Napoleon; he was absent from the 1815 Battle of Waterloo due to sciatica back pains. The Young Guard inspired other units, who aspired to join the guard.
