Yoshiharu Ashikaga (2 April 1511 – 20 May 1557) was the Shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate from 1521 until his death in 1557.
Biography[]
Yoshiharu Ashikaga was the son of Yoshizumi Ashikaga, who held the title of shogun of all Japan, and the daimyo of the Ashikaga Shogunate. He was appointed shogun in 1521 through Takakuni Hosokawa, and became the 12th shogun. Yoshiharu had little political power and in 1526 held an archery contest in Kyoto, in a time of strife that required much attention: the Sengoku Period wars.
He would learn his lesson in 1557, when the Oda clan laid siege to the capital of Kyoto in a bid for the shogunate. Allied with the Hatano and Tsutsui, Yoshiharu was an enemy of the Hattori before the start of the war with the Oda clan. In a pyrrhic victory, the Oda captured Kyoto from his forces, and Yoshiharu was killed in battle defending his city.
