York is a walled city in England that has served as the county town of the region of Yorkshire in the north of the country. The city was founded in 71 AD by the Roman Empire as the city of "Eburacum", and it served as the capital of Britannia Inferior and later of Northumbria and Jorvik during the age of the Vikings. During the Middle Ages, it became known for its role in the wool business, and it was considered to be the greatest city in northern England. In the 19th century, York became a center of candy manufacturing and the railroads, being industralized along with the rest of northern England. In 2010, the city of York and the surrounding areas had a population of 202,400 people.
