Ynyr

Ynyr (430-500) was King of Gliwissig from 450 to 500 (succeeding Dyfnwal ap Ednyfed and preceding Caradoc) and King of Gwent from 453 to 480 (succeeding Vortimer and preceding Iddon ap Ynyr).

Biography

Ynyr was born in 430, the son of Dyfnwal ap Ednyfed; he was the great-grandson of Magnus Maximus and thus a distant relative of Ambrosius Aurelianus, Uther Pendragon, and King Arthur. He married Vortimer's daughter, Saint Materiana, and had two sons: Caradoc and Iddon ap Ynyr. He abdicated as King of Gwent in 480 to let Iddon rule, but he and Iddon died within a year of each other in 500, leading to Caradoc inheriting all of his father's lands.
