Yefim Fomin

Yefim Moiseevich Fomin (15 January 1909-30 June 1941) was a commissar of the Soviet Union who fought in World War II.

Biography[]

Yefim Fomin was born in Kolyshki in the Vitebsk Voblast of the Russian Empire (present-day Belarus) to a Belarusian-Jewish family. Raised in an orphanage due to the loss of his parents at a young age, Fomin became a member of the Bolshevik Party in 1924. He became a propagandist after formally being inducted in 1930, and was made a political commissar of the Soviet Union.

While in Brest-Litovsk waiting for a train so that he could see his family, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941. Fomin took over the Red Army troops at the Kholm Gate and fought against the Axis, but he was identified as a Bolshevik leader and a Jew and was shot almost immediately after the Germans captured him.
