Yakov Twersky

Yakov Twersky (died October 1941) was a Belarusian Jewish man from Horodyszcze who fought with the Bielski Otriad during World War II.

Biography[]

Yakov Twersky was from Horodyszcze, Congress Poland, Russian Empire, and he was born into a Jewish family. Twersky and Peretz Shorshaty both hid in a well when the German SS liquidated the Jews of Horodyszcze in October 1941, and they joined forces with the Bielski Otriad after starving for two days. The two of them joined Zus Bielski and some other partisans during a spree of revenge killings against collaborationist Belarusian farmers, only for them to be attacked by a Wehrmacht patrol on a road into town. Twersky was shot in the chest by a German soldier on a troop transport as the Germans arrived to attack the partisans, and Twersky died instantly; Shorshaty would die of his wounds.
