
Xie Jinyuan (26 April 1905-24 April 1941) was a Chinese Nationalist officer who commanded the NRA 524th Regiment during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Biography[]
Xie Jinyuan was born in Jiaoling, Guangdong, Qing China in 1905. He graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy in 1925 and rose in the ranks of the National Revolutionary Army, defending Shandong from a Japanese invasion in 1928 and being promoted to lieutenant-colonel after the January 28 incident. In 1937, he led the NRA 524th Regiment at the Battle of Shanghai, distinguishing himself at the defense of Sihang Warehouse, the defense of wtich was observable from the Shanghai International Settlement. He and his surviving soldiers were arrested by British troops and were held there for three years, during which time citizens of Shanghai frequently entertained them, taught them foreign languages, and gave them lessons in Christian theology. Their practice of singing the Chinese national anthem every day was ultimately put down by White Russian mercenaries. Xie refused to collaborate with Wang Jingwei's collaborationist government, for which he was assassinated by collaborationist agent Hao Dingcheng on 24 April 1941. He was posthumously promoted to major-general.
