Xiang Bo (died 192 BC) was a Chu (and later Han) noble and the uncle of Xiang Yu. Even after his nephew's death at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC, he was ennobled by Liu Bang for saving his life.
Biography[]
Xiang Bo was the son of Xiang Yan, the brother of Xiang Liang, and the uncle of Xiang Yu. The brothers grew up as commoners in Qin after their father was killed during the conquest of Chu, and they covertly plotted to overthrow Qin Shi Huangdi and restore the kingdom of Chu.
They launched their rebellion in 209 BC as several uprisings broke out against Qin Er Shi, and, after Xiang Liang was slain in battle in 208 BC, the rash Xiang Yu took over the rebellion.
In 206 BC, Xiang Bo saved Liu Bang's life by interrupting a sword dance which Xiang Yu had intended would result in Liu Bang's murder at the start of the Chu-Han Contention.
Xiang Bo often tried to reconcile between the two warring factions, and, after his nephew's death at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC and Liu Bang's ascenscion as Han emperor, Xiang Bo and his family were pardoned for their loyalty and Xiang Bo was made Marquis of Yeyang. He died in 192 BC.
