
Xiahou Ying (died 172 BC) was Liu Bang's coachman and personal charioteer during the Chu-Han Contention.
Biography[]
Xiahou Ying was born in Pei County, Jiangsu, and he worked in the county office as the man in charge of the horses and chariots. In 211 BC, after he got into an argument with Lady Cao after refusing to pay the bill at her tavern, he was attacked by her lover Liu Bang, and Liu Bang was imprisoned for assaulting an official. Liu Bang was supposed to be punished, but Xiahou Ying helped cover up the incident and was beaten and imprisoned. He came to befriend Liu Bang and join his rebellion against the Qin, serving as his personal charioteer and fighting bravely on the battlefield. He was named Marquis of Zhaoping and Minister Coachman after Liu Bang became King of Hanzhong in 206 BC, and, during the Chu-Han Contention, he helped to save Liu Bang's children after Liu Bang attempted to leave them behind to lighten the load of their fleeing chariot. He later accompanied Liu Bang as he suppressed his vassals' rebellions following the establishment of the Han, and he helped his lord escape the Xiongnu at the Battle of Baideng. He died in 172 BC.
