Wulfstan of Westphalia

Wulfstan of Westphalia (died 768) was a Westphalian Saxon general who commanded an invasion of northern Francia in 768 AD, the first year of King Charlemagne's reign. Wulfstan first invaded Frisia, sacking the city of Utrecht and liberating it from Frankish rule; he placed Bivin on the throne of the Duchy of Francia. Wulfstan then marched south, targeting the city of Ghent. However, he committed a serious error by deciding to besiege the city rather than attack it, enabling the Frankish Count of the Palace Anselm to march northwest from Soissons to lift the Saxon siege. The Frankish army annihilated Wulfstan's Saxon army at the Battle of Ghent, during which Wulfstan and his men were encircled and massacred.
