Wuhan

Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province in central China, the most populous city in the region and in Hubei.

History[]

Wuhan was founded around 1,485 BCE, older than Beijing, Xi'an, and Nanjing, the other major cities of China. The Battle of Chibi in 208 CE took place at the cliffs on the Yangtze River not far from the site of Wuhan, and it became a major city under the following Chinese dynasties. In 1271 the Mongol Empire seized Wuhan in an assault against the Song dynasty, but it was revived in later generations, and it became a provincial capital under the Yuan dynasty. It was also the site of the World War II/Second Sino-Japanese War Battle of Wuhan, and today it has a population of 10,220,000, being the most-populous city in central China and the capital of Hubei.
