The Workers' Party of Brazil (Portuguese: Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT) is a democratic socialist political party in Brazil, founded in 1980. The party was founded in opposition to the 1964 military coup and the ensuing dictatorship, and the party had a social democratic/socialist majority and a Marxist-Leninist and Trotskyist minority. The PT party became rivals with the social democratic and centrist Brazilian Social Democracy Party during the 1990s, and it dominated politics from 2003 to 2016 under Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff. In 2017, the party held 57/513 Chamber of Deputies seats, 11/81 Senate seats, 5/27 governorships, 149/1,219 state assembly seats, 254/5,566 local government seats, and 5,181/51,748 city councillorships, declining as a result of Lula and Rousseff's corruption scandals.
