Woodward & Lothrop was a department store chain headquartered in Washington DC. Founded in 1887 by Samuel Walter Woodward and Alvin Mason Lothrop of Massachusetts, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1994 and completed liquidation in 1995. Its flagship store was renovated from 1898 to 1902 and additional floors were added from 1912 to 1913, and it obtained its lasting form in 1927. The building was declared a DC Historic Landmark in 1964, and, after the company's closure, the building was purchased by the Washington National Opera in 1996. However, the building was resold to a developer in 1999, converted into retail offices in 2003, survived a fire in 2004, and came to house a three-floor Zara in 2007.
