Wirich Philipp von Daun

Wirich Philipp von Daun (19 October 1669-30 July 1741) was a Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire and the father of Leopold Joseph von Daun.

Biography[]

Wirich Philipp von Daun was born in Vienna, Austria in 1669, and he served under Eugene of Savoy during the War of the Spanish Succession, distinguishing himself during the defense of Turin and capturing Gaeta in 1707. He became Viceroy of Naples in 1713, but the Spanish defeated him at the Battle of Milazzo while invading Sicily in 1718 during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. In 1725, Von Daun briefly served as Governor of the Austrian Netherlands, and he governed Milan from 1725 to 1736, including during the War of the Polish Succession. He died in 1741.
