Winfred Haverford

Winfred Haverford (died 1864) was an American businessman who lived in New York City during the 1860s. A business associate of Norbert Morehouse, he used his wealth to fund a lavish lifestyle that included hosting prize fights and frequenting Contessa Pompidou's upscale brothel. There, he preyed on young girls and murdered the young girl Kate Reilly, whom he mistook for the prostitute Annie Reilly, a frequent selection of his. His wealth bought him immunity in court despite detective Kevin Corcoran's investigation, and he attempted to use Pinkerton detectives to force Corcoran to hand over Annie. He later visited Annie at Contessa Pompidou's brothel, where Corcoran ambushed Haverford with Annie's help. Annie stabbed Winfred to death before Corcoran killed the Contessa, avenging Kate Reilly's murder.

Haverford was a Republican who held staunch anti-Irish and anti-German prejudices, holding that Irish Union Army soldiers were bloodthirsty criminals before the war and would come home to join forces with the Germans to attack the freed Black laborers who had come to New York. He and his wife also donated to the rebuilding of the Colored Orphans' Asylum in the aftermath of the New York draft riots.
