Winchester Garrison

The Winchester Garrison was a military outpost located in medieval Winchester, Hampshire, England. The city was founded by the Romans as Venta Belgarum in 70 AD, and it served as the capital of the Belgae tribe; the Roman Army maintained a garrison in the city. At the start of the 3rd century AD, Venta Belgarum was given stone walls, and, following the End of Roman rule in Britain, work was carried out to improve the city's defenses. The old Roman garrison continued to be occupied by soldiers, first by the Romano-British and then by the Anglo-Saxons, who built a palisade around the Roman walls and towers. The Anglo-Saxons called the city Wintanceastre, meaning "Fort Venta". The garrison was still heavily guarded by the late 9th century AD, although it is unknown what ultimately became of the palisaded garrison during later in Medieval England.
