Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated 61 miles south-west of London and 13.6 miles from Southampton, its closest city. Winchester originated as the Roman settlement of Venta Belgarum (later serving as the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex), and the famous Winchester Cathedral was built in 1079. The city would also become home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom. In 2011, Winchester had a population of 45,184 people.
