Williamson Gang

The Williamson Gang at Fort Mercer

The Williamson Gang was an American outlaw gang of the Wild West. It was founded by Bill Williamson, a former member of the Van der Linde Gang of the 1890s, and it became known as the most dangerous gang left in the American West by 1911. Based out of the abandoned US Army base at Fort Mercer in Socorro County, New Mexico, the gang was known to attack homesteaders in the back country, kill the men, and rape the women. The BOI entrapped Williamson's former comrade John Marston into hunting him down, and he helped US Marshal and Armadillo sheriff Leigh Johnson take down the local gangs and kill several of Williamson's men at Tumbleweed before securing their help in attacking Fort Mercer. He infiltrated the fort in Nigel West Dickens' medicine wagon, and he used a Gatling gun hidden in the back to gun down droves of Williamson's men. He and the deputies then proceeded to clear the fort of the outlaws and kill all of the reinforcements sent to retake the fort, wiping out Williamson's gang. Williamson himself was tracked down to Mexico by Marston and killed, putting an end to his reign of terror.
