William Wisneski Sr.

William Wisneski Sr. (5 September 1903-12 March 1988) was a Polish immigrant to the United States

Biography[]

William Wisneski was born in Mlawa, Congress Poland, Russian Empire in 1903, the son of Stanley Wisniewski (1875-1923) and Antonia Domozych (1877-1961). When William was four, his father moved his family to the United States rather than be conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army. The Wisneskis arrived at Ellis Island in New York City, and they settled on a farm in Connecticut. Later, William Wisneski moved to Jersey City, where he raised a large family with his wife, Helen Lemanowicz, at 171 Van Winkle Avenue. Wisneski he worked for the Lackawanna Erie Railroad to provide for his family, often taking the family on free train trips to Port Jervis, New York, and working as a "bull" on the trains, chasing off homeless people who hitched a ride on the trains. William and Helen Wisneski had seven children: Helen, John, Stanley, Dorothy, William, Sophie, and Joseph, and the family originally lived in a railroad flat on 116 1/2 Palisade Avenue. He passed away in March 1988 at the age of 85.
