William W

William Warner Hoppin (1 September 1807-19 April 1890) was the Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 2 May 1854 to 26 May 1857, succeeding Francis M. Dimond and preceding Elisha Dyer.

Biography[]

William Warner Hoppin was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1807, and he served on the city council from 1838 to 1842, on the Board of Aldermen from 1847 to 1852, and as Governor from 1854 to 1857, initially heading both the Whig and American tickets before becoming a Republican. In 1854, he raised the nativist "Guards of Liberty Militia" after spreading rumors of a Catholic conspiracy, and, while he participated in a last-ditch effort to prevent a civil war from breaking out in 1861, he staunchly supported the Union during the ensuing war. He served in the State Senate from 1866 to 1867, in the State House in 1875, and as a Registrar in Bankruptcy from 1867 to 1872. He died in 1890.
