William T

William Thomas Minor (3 October 1815-13 October 1889) was the Know Nothing Governor of Connecticut from 2 May 1855 to 6 May 1857, succeeding Henry Dutton and preceding Alexander H. Holley.

Biography[]

William Thomas Minor was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1815, and he became a lawyer in 1840. He served in the State House from 1841 to 1848 as a Whig, in the State Senate from 1854 to 1855, and as Governor from 1855 to 1857 as a Know Nothing. Minor supported lengthening the period of residency before naturalization, dismissed six Irish militia companies, disenfranchised those who could not read the state constitution, supported public education, and opposed slavery. He joined the Republican Party on leaving office and served as a judge from 1868 to 1873, and he died in 1889.
