William Spencer Newbury

William Spencer Newbury (19 September 1834-19 November 1915) was the Republican Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1877 to 1879, succeeding J.A. Chapman and preceding David P. Thompson.

Biography[]

William Spencer Newbury was born in Ripley, New York in 1834, and he lived in St. Paul, Minnesota and Sioux City, Iowa before serving in the Union Army's 6th Kansas Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War. He served as Mayor of Iola, Kansas in 1870 before resigning and moving to Oregon that same year, working as a wheat buyer and shipper in Portland. He served as Mayor of Portland from 1877 to 1879 and later practiced law in Baker City, and he died in Portland in 1915.
