Biography[]

William Smith was born in North Carolina in 1762, and he was appointed to the US Senate in 1816 to finish John Taylor's term. He served until 1823, and he served in the State House of Representatives from 1824 to 1826 before returning to the Senate from 1826 to 1831. In 1832, he moved to Louisiana, and then to Huntsville, Alabama in 1836. Smith went on to serve in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1836 until his death in 1840, and he declined President Andrew Jackson's offer to appoint him to the US Supreme Court, even though the US Senate had voted for his confirmation.
