Biography[]
William Sylvester Taylor was born in Morgantown, Kentucky in 1853, and he worked as a teacher and attorney before serving as a Greenback presidential elector in 1880 and becoming a Republican in 1884. He served as a county judge from 1886 to 1894, as Attorney General from 1896 to 1899, and as Governor from 1899 to 1900, when his election was successfully challenged by state Democrats. His successor William Goebel was assassinated four days later, and Taylor was accused of being an accessory in his murder, forcing Taylor to flee to Indiana before being pardoned in 1909. He continued to live in Indianapolis until his death in 1928.
