William Sargent Ladd (10 October 1826-6 January 1893) was the Democratic Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1854 to 1855 (succeeding Josiah Failing and preceding George W. Vaughn) and from 1857 to 1858 (succeeding James O'Neill and preceding A.M. Starr).
Biography[]
William Sargent Ladd was born in Holland, Vermont in 1826, and he was raised in Sanborton Bridge, New Hampshire. He worked in the railroad industry before a demotion compelled him to move west to San Francisco, California, and, upon finding heavy job competition there, he moved on to Portland, Oregon, where he toiled hard to open a liquor store. He became a wholesaler during the 1850s and erected the city's first brick building in 1853. He served as the city's Democratic Mayor from 1854 to 1855 and from 1857 to 1858, and he became a Republican in 1864 and supported Abraham Lincoln's re-election. He died in 1893, two years after founding Ladd's Addition.
