William S. Gregory

William Samuel Gregory (4 August 1825-11 August 1887) was the Whig Mayor of Kansas City from 18 April 1853 to February 1854, preceding Johnston Lykins.

Biography[]

William Samuel Gregory was born in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1825, and he moved to Jackson County, Missouri in 1844 and settled in Kansas City in 1851. He opened a grocery store and became Kansas City's first mayor in 1853, but he was forced to resign after ten months after it was revealed that his farm was located ten miles outside the city limits. He went on to serve in the Union Army during the American Civil War and engaged in the grocery business in St. Louis and Chicago before returning to Kansas City, where he died in 1887.
