William Pickering WA

William Pickering (15 March 1798 – 22 April 1873) was the Republican Governor of the Washington Territory from June 1862 to 8 January 1867, succeeding William H. Wallace and preceding George Edward Cole.

Biography[]

William Pickering was born in Yorkshire, England in 1798, and he graduated from Oxford in 1820 before moving to Albion, Illinois in 1821 and becoming a businessman. He served in the state house from 1842 to 1852 and as a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention, and he served as Abraham Lincoln's governor of the Washington Territory from 1862 to 1867. He returned to Illinois after his term and died in Albion in 1873.
