
William Medill (February 1802-2 September 1865) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-OH 9) from 4 March 1839 to 3 March 1843 (succeeding John Chaney and preceding Elias Florence) and the Democratic Governor of Ohio from 13 July 1853 to 14 January 1856 (succeeding Reuben Wood and preceding Salmon P. Chase).
Biography[]
William Medill was born in White Clay Hundred, Delaware in 1802, the son of Irish immigrants. Raised on the outskirts of Newark, he became a lawyer in 1830 and moved to Ohio, serving in the State House from 1835 to 1838, in the US House of Representatives from 1839 to 1843, and as Governor from 1853 to 1856. He went on to serve as First Comptroller of the US Treasury from 1857 to 1851, and he died in Lancaster, Ohio in 1865.
