William Joseph Walsh (30 January 1841-9 April 1921) was Archbishop of Dublin from 3 July 1885 to 9 April 1921, succeeding Edward MacCabe and preceding Edward Joseph Byrne.
Biography[]
William Joseph Walsh was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland on 30 January 1841, and he was ordained as a Catholic priest on 22 May 1866 and was involved with Maynooth College as a theology professor and as its President from 1880 to 1885, when he was consecrated as Archbishop of Dublin. He was openly sympathetic to Irish nationalism and supported the Home Rule movement, which led to his inability to become a cardinal. From 1908 until his death in 1921, he served as Chancellor of the National University of Ireland.
