
William Harper (17 January 1790 – 10 October 1847) was a US Senator from South Carolina (DR) from 8 March to 29 November 1826, succeeding John Gaillard and preceding William Smith.
Biography[]
William Harper was born in Antigua on 17 January 1790, and he was partly educated in Baltimore, Maryland before becoming one of Columbia, South Carolina's most prominent lawyers during the 1810s. In 1826, he was appointed to continue John Gaillard's US Senate term until a successor was elected, and William Smith was ultimately chosen. Afterwards, he became involved with state politics, and he supported his state, free trade, and states' rights. He died in 1847.
