William Haile NH

William Haile (May 1807-22 July 1876) was the Republican Governor of New Hampshire from 4 June 1857 to 2 June 1859, succeeding Ralph Metcalf and preceding Ichabod Goodwin.

Biography[]

William Haile was born in Putney, Vermont in 1807, and he was raised in Chesterfield, New Hampshire and manufactured cloth and clothing in Hinsdale. Originally a nativist and anti-slavery Democrat, Haile served in the State House from 1846 to 1850 and from 1853 to 1856 and in the State Senate from 1854 to 1856, and he became a Republican in 1854 and served as Governor from 1857 to 1859. He died in 1876.
