
William Ephraim Smith (14 March 1829-11 March 1890) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-GA 2) from 4 March 1875 to 3 March 1881, succeeding Richard H. Whiteley and preceding Henry Gray Turner.
Biography[]
William Ephraim Smith was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1829, and he became a lawyer in 1846 at the young age of 17. He became a planter and lawyer in Albany, and he served as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, although he opposed secession. He lost his right leg at the Battle of Oak Grove during the Seven Days Battles of 1862. After the war, he served in the US House of Representatives from 1875 to 1881, and he died in 1890.
