
William Dorsheimer (5 February 1832-26 March 1888) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NY 7) from 4 March 1883 to 3 March 1885, succeeding P. Henry Dugro and preceding John J. Adams.
Biography[]
William Dorsheimer was born in Lyons, New York in 1832, the son of state treasurer Philip Dorsheimer. He became a lawyer in Buffalo in 1854, and he was a Democrat before joining the Republican Party in 1856 and serving on the staff of John C. Fremont during the American Civil War. After the war, he served as a US attorney, and he joined the Liberal Republican Party in 1872 and the Democrats soon after. Dorsheimer served as Lieutenant Governor from 1875 to 1879 and in the US House of Representatives from 1883 to 1885, and he purchased the New York Star and ran his paper until his death in 1888.
