William Cameron Sproul

William Cameron Sproul (16 September 1870-21 March 1928) was a Republican Governor from Pennsylvania from 21 January 1919 to 16 January 1923, succeeding Martin Brumbaugh and preceding Gifford Pinchot.

Biography[]

William Cameron Sproul was born in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1870, and he was raised in Chester, Pennsylvania. He became involved in the printing and journalism industries before becoming president of the Chester Daily Times, and he became a bank director in 1895 and later became involved in the shipping industry. He served in the State Senate from 1897 to 1919 (being elected at the young age of 26), creating the state highway system in 1911. He went on to serve as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1923, and he expanded funding for education, roadway construction, and veterans' services after World War I. He died in 1928.
