William Alvord

William Alvord (3 January 1833-21 December 1904) was the Republican Mayor of San Francisco from 4 December 1871 to 30 November 1873, succeeding Thomas Henry Selby and preceding James Otis.

Biography[]

William Alvord was born in Albany, New York in 1833, and he moved to New York City in 1850 to work in the hardware trade. He moved to Marysville, California in 1853 and then to San Francisco, where he imported hardware before serving as Mayor from 1871 to 1873. He later helped refound the Bank of California, serving as its president from 1878 and engaging in trade with Europe, Japan, and China. He remained president until his death in 1904.
