
Wilhelm Rudolf Daniel Philipp von Gall (24 June 1734-8 September 1799) was a colonel of Hesse-Kassel who commanded Hesse-Hanau's regiment during the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[]
Wilhelm von Gall was born on 24 June 1734 in Hesse-Kassel, and he served in the military of Hesse during the Seven Years' War. Von Gall was promoted to the rank of Brigadier/Colonel and sent to North America as the commander of the sole regiment of Hesse-Hanau during the American Revolutionary War, leading his regiment under Friedrich-Adolf Riedesel during the war. Von Gall was one of the Hessian leaders to be captured in the Saratoga campaign, and he spent the rest of the war as a prisoner, returning home at the war's end in 1783. Von Gall died in 1799 at the age of 65. His son Ludwig von Gall would become a Major-General in the 19th century.
