Wilhelm Bittrich

Wilhelm Bittrich (26 February 1894 – 19 April 1979) was an Obergruppenfuhrer of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Biography[]

Wilhelm Bittrich was born on 26 February 1894 in Wernigerode, Saxony, German Empire. Bittrich served in the air force of Germany during World War I and in the Freikorps after the war ended, and he led SS troops during the invasion of Poland and the Battle of France at the start of World War II. He took command of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich and fought in Operation Overlord and Operation Market Garden against the Allied Powers, and in April 1945 he was transferred to fight against the Red Army's Vienna Offensive. He survived the war, and he died in 1979.
