Whitney Smith was a South Carolina planter and a relative of the Main family of Mont Royal. In 1854, he challenged Charles Main to a duel in response to Charles' affair with his wife Suemarie, but, after being trained by his cousin Orry Main, Charles was able to wound and defeat Smith in the ensuing confrontation.
