The White League was an American white paramilitary organization that existed from 1874 to 1876 during the Reconstruction era, formed with the goal of turning Republican Party members out of office and intimidating freed African-Americans into not voting or becoming politically organized. The league originated in Grant Parish, Louisiana and the neighboring parishes, and chapters would become active in several parishes across the state. The group was considered to be the armed wing of the Southern Democrats during the 1870s, and its voter intimidation led to the Democratic Party winning the 1876 state legislature elections. The White Lague's members would be absorbed into the state militia and national guard, enforcing the state's racist, discriminatory, and segregationist policies.
