White House

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. Built from 1792 to 1800, and modelled after Dublin's Leinster House by architect James Hoban, the White House was first home to President John Adams, who moved into the building on 1 November 1800; it has since been the official residence of every President. In 1814, the British Army set the White House ablaze during the War of 1812, but reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Madison returned to the White House in 1817. In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt moved his workplace into the newly constructed West Wing, while President William Howard Taft created the Oval Office in 1909 and an East Wing was later added as a reception area.
