
Wharton Jackson Green (28 February 1831-6 August 1910) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NC 3) from 4 March 1883 to 3 March 1887, succeeding John W. Shackelford and preceding Charles W. McClammy.
Biography[]
Wharton Jackson Green was born in St. Marks, Florida in 1831, the son of Thomas Jefferson Green, the grandson of Jesse Wharton, and the cousin of Matt Whitaker Ransom and Robert Ransom Jr.. He became a lawyer in Washington DC in 1854 before becoming a farmer in Warren County, North Carolina in 1859. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, and he was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. He later served as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1868, 1872, 1876, and 1888, and he served in the US House of Representatives from 1883 to 1887. He died in 1910.
