
Westwood is a commercial and residential neighborhood on the West Side of Los Angeles, California. Westwood is home to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), which was developed seven years after Westwood's 1919 foundation. Westwood became known as an affluent neighborhood of the city, but it was not untouched by crime; in 1988, a 27-year-old Japanese-American woman was killed after being caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout. In 2008, Westwood had a population of 52,041 people, with 62.9% being white, 23.1% Asian, 7% Hispanic, 2% African-American, and 4.9% other.
